Abstract

The need for thesauri to help users in their search for information in online information systems has been discussed for several decades. Many wide‐ranging contributions have been made to solve this problem. Nevertheless, investigation is needed to design a thesaurus structure based on what is relevant for users and generators of information within a specific subject domain. This paper explores the possibility of creating a thesaurus from the cognitive viewpoint. This approach is based on a system (in this case represented by a thesaurus) that organises its representation of knowledge or its classification as closely as possible to the authors‘ and users’ images of the subject domain with the objective of increasing the interaction between users and texts, and thus the communication in a given information retrieval system. From this point of view, the thesaurus structure is considered as the essential foundation on which to base such an interactive thesaurus. Furthermore, this structure is conceived as representing the merging point for both the generators‘ and the users’ models of the subject domain and for their information needs. This paper is dedicated mainly to the generators‘ side involved in this process. It demonstrates how an author’s writings can be used to identify the generators‘ model and perception of the subject domain, and how these can later be inserted in the thesaurus structure. Discourse analysis is used as a main method to identify the categories and its relevance for building such a structure is discussed. It also outlines a general approach for the user side to set up different methods of getting the users’ information needs into the thesaurus structure.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a new model for solving the integrated production planning and scheduling. Usually, the two decision levels are treated sequentially because of their complexity. Scheduling depends on the lot sizes calculated at the tactical level and ignoring scheduling constraints generates unrealistic and inconsistent decisions. Therefore, integrating more detail scheduling constraint in production planning is important for managing efficiently operations. Therefore, an integrated model was developed, and two evolutionary optimization approaches were suggested for solving it, namely, genetic algorithm (GA) and the hybridization of simulated annealing (SA) with GA HSAGA. The proposed algorithms have some parameters that must be adjusted using Taguchi method. Therefore, to evaluate the proposed algorithm, the authors compared the results given by GA and the hybridization. The SA-based local search is embedded into a GA search mechanism to move the GA away from being closed within local optima. The analysis shows that the combination of simulated annealing with GA gives better solutions and minimizes the total production costs.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper opted for an approached resolution method particularly GA and simulated annealing. The study represents a comparison between the results found using GA and the hybridization of simulated annealing and GA. A total of 45 instances were studied to evaluate job-shop problems of different sizes.

Findings

The results illustrate that for 36 instances of 45, the hybridization of simulated annealing and GA HSAGA has provided best production costs. The efficiency demonstrated by HSAGA approach is related to the combination between the exploration ability of GA and the capacity to escape local optimum of simulated annealing.

Originality/value

This study provides a new resolution approach to the integration of planning and scheduling while considering a new operational constrain. The model suggested aims to control the available capacity of the resources and guaranties that the resources to be consumed do not exceed the real availability to avoid the blocking that results from the unavailability of resources. Furthermore, to solve the MILP model, a GA is proposed and then it is combined to simulated annealing.

Abstract

The paper presents a finite‐difference scheme to solve the transient conjugated heat transfer problem in a concentric annulus with simultaneously developing hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers. The annular forced flow is laminar with constant physical properties. Thermal transient is initiated by a step change in the prescribed isothermal temperature of the inner surface of the inside tube wall while the outer surface of the external tube is kept adiabatic. The effects of solid‐fluid conductivity ratio and diffusivity ratio on the thermal behaviour of the flow have been investigated. Numerical results are presented for a fluid of Pr = 0.7 flowing in an annulus of radius ratio 0.5 with various values of inner and outer solid wall thicknesses.

A finite‐difference scheme is developed for solving the boundary layer equations governing the unsteady laminar free convection flow in open ended vertical concentric annuli. The initial condition considered for the creation of the thermal transient corresponds to a step change in temperature at the inner annulus boundary while the outer wall is maintained adiabatic. Numerical results for a fluid of Pr = 0.7 in an annulus of radius ratio 0.5 are presented. The results show the developing velocity and pressure fields with respect to space and time. Also, the important relationship between the annulus height and the induced flow rate is presented for various values of the time parameter starting from quiescence to the final steady state.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a closed-form analytical solution to evaluate the nominal moment capacity and associated deflections of steel-FRP beam systems. The proposed solution takes into consideration the partial composite behavior resulting from the interfacial contact and slip between the subcomponents of the system.

Design/methodology/approach

The partial composite action theory was used to develop an elastic analytical solution for the deflection of simply supported composite steel-FRP beams subjected to a mid-span point load. The solution takes into consideration the partial composite behavior of the system that arises from the interlayer slip at the steel-FRP interface.

Findings

The developed analytical model is used to predict the nominal moment capacity of the composite beam and the load value at the onset of yielding in the steel subcomponent of the section. The distribution of shear forces induced in the steel fasteners due to the interfacial slip is also obtained analytically. A comparative study is conducted by comparing the analytical results to their counterparts resulting from finite element modeling of the composite steel-FRP system. The agreement between analytical results and finite element predictions validates the accuracy of the derived analytical solution for partial composite steel-FRP beams.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed solution applies only to the FRP strips and 6 mm steel bolts used in the study.

Originality/value

Recent studies revealed a promising efficiency of using mechanically fastened hybrid FRP sheets in strengthening steel beams. A major advantage of this technique is the ductile behavior of the steel-FRP system. The current paper introduces a closed-form analytical solution to evaluate the nominal moment capacity and associated deflections of steel-FRP beam systems. Forces developed at the steel-FRP interface due to the relative slip between both components are considered in the proposed analytical solution.
